Memorial Day weekend is almost here, and you have either had plans for a few weeks, or are playing it by ear. Regardless of what your situation may be, we know your schedule will not be the same as it is every week, and this may have a direct effect on your workout regimen. We’ve identified fun activities that burn the most calories to help you get your heart rate up while on your break. All calorie breakdowns are calculated per one hour of exercise.
Kayaking – Average calories: 370/hr
You’ve seen the rowing machine at the gym. This alternate super fun workout is beyond amazing for your upper body and can balance out those two beers you will probably have at the beach. According to Livestrong.com and the American Council on Exercise, “a 125-lb. person burns 283 calories per hour of kayaking while a 150-lb. person burns 340, a 175-lb. person burns 397 calories and a 200-lb. person burns 454 calories.” The reason for this difference is because the change in weight creates more resistance with the water and requires more expenditure by the body.
Jet Skiing – Average Calories: 398/hr
This activity may be more expensive than others, but you probably would not have guessed that you burn so many calories driving through some water. Apart from the adrenaline rush you get going at high speeds and (maybe) flipping into the water, this activity works both your lower- and upper-body the entire ride. Every time you land in the water, your body braces, making it an amazing core workout as well. This calculation is for an 180lb person.
Beach Volleyball – Average Calories: 710/hr
There is a reason why beach volleyball players feel comfortable playing in bikinis – well because it’s a killer workout. As you bump, set and spike the ball, you are basically working your entire body. The added resistance from the sand almost doubles the caloric expenditure of players. Mind you, the average person will have a hard time playing a full hour of non-stop beach volleyball, but it’s sure worth a shot. This calculation is for an 185lb person.
Inline Skating – Average Calories: 600/hr
Rollerblading with your girls, maybe boom box on shoulder, maybe by the beach? Sounds like a plan. Although rollerblading is similar to running, it’s definitely a lot more fun! Slap on some cute shorts and rollerblade to a breakfast or lunch spot with your friends for a change. According to Livestrong and the manufacturer Rollerblade, you burn twice as many calories using inline skates than the traditional set - this once again is varied by weight. This calculation is for a 150lb person.
Dancing (at a club) – Average Calories: 400/hr
You’ve known that all those nights of twerking to Diplo had to be good for something right? Well guess what? According to Livestrong and Harvard Health Publications, you burn about 180 calories in 30 minutes of fast dancing if you weigh 125 pounds. If you weigh 155 pounds, fast dancing for 30 minutes burns about 223 calories. So strap your dancing shoes on!
Hiking – Average Calories: 500/hr
So hiking trails vary in intensity and are hard to come across in certain areas. If you are lucky enough to have a trail nearby, you’ll probably grow to love this calorie-busting alternative to your regular workout. According to Livestrong, “a 160-lb person burns between 430 and 440 calories per hour of hiking. A 200-lb person burns approximately 550 calories per hour of hiking. The more you weigh, the more calories you burn in an hour of hiking.”
