Review: Founding Farmers in D.C.
We took a trip to Washington D.C.! Ya know, 2016's Restaurant City of the Year. And we just had to try some good ol’ American cuisine in our nation’s Capitol! If you know D.C. or know of someone that does, they usually recommend two food digs: Ted’s Bulletin and Founding Farmers.Like seriously, they come up every time, and rightfully so! We had the opportunity to swing by Founding Farmers and try out the famed D.C. gem.
Founding Farmers serves American fare with a modern twist. Their restaurant group aims to be as much farm-to-table as possible and always makes their food from scratch. On our health-o-meter we give this place a 4 because of their agricultural principles #SupportLocal and their meatless/veggie options. They have three locations within the DMV area (D.C., Maryland, Virginia). We visited their D.C. spot, a hop, skip and a jump away from the national mall.
As a two-story restaurant, Founding Farmers plays with their space and interior decor. Although the restaurant is sleek, clean and modern, they still pay homage to their agricultural roots: dove- shaped lamps, floating clouds, hay printed smog glass.
From the busboy to our server, everyone on the crew was very amiable and paid great attention to detail (since when does a runner ask you how your day has been???). Even the bartenders, slammed with Brunch zombies, attended to everyone efficiently.
All drinks should have bacon... and all candies should be bacon
After walking the city for a bit and checking out the Renwick Museum, we built up a thirst and had to get to the restaurant much earlier than intended to have a couple of cocktails at the bar. We ordered three cocktails. First, The Bone, a whiskey, tabasco cocktail with a bacon lolli. Second, a Farmers Fizz, a sparkling gin mix. And finally, my personal favorite, an Orchid, gin + egg whites + lavender - this drink was phenomenal.
Now what really matters: the food. We started off with some Baby Cheeseburgers. Yummy, but wish we could've tried the Spicy Crab Corn Dip. For our mains, we ordered the 14oz Salt Crusted Prime Rib with a Baked Sweet Potato and mac n'cheese - we were told this was the juiciest cut on the menu. We of course ordered the Shrimp and Lobster Risotto; although heavy as this plate typically is, I have to say the herby taste felt light. It was a great combination.
And finally, for dessert we ordered a chocolate milkshake and an order of beignets. It truly was a beautiful grand finale to an amazing feast. We are 1000% glad we listened to all of our friends' recommendations and made a stop here. This place is definitely a D.C. must!
