Essential oils are naturally occurring, aromatic compounds which can be found in the stems, flowers, roots and other parts of a plant. Most essential oils are produced by a process called distillation, where water is heated under the raw plant material and steam extracts the oil. Although their popularity has been on the rise, essential oils are not a new craze to hit the market. They have been around for thousands of years, long before Walgreens pharmacy opened up with the medicines we are now accustomed to buying. The best part is that essential oils can be used for just about everything, from medicinal purposes to wellness and house products. But with over 100 essential oils out there, the process of choosing which oils to buy can get a bit confusing. Just about everything about lavender is amazing, from its sweet floral aroma to its effective power of relieving stress. Lavender offers a host of benefits, the primary being a great antiseptic, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, and sedative. It is known as a universal oil that can be used to balance the body and work wherever it is needed. If lavender oil had a motto it would be, “When in doubt, use me.”

  • Apply to bruises, cuts, and scrapes to support your body’s natural response

  • Rub a few drops between your hands and brush them across your pillowcase to encourage a restful and deep sleep

  • Add 2-3 drops to skin after washing to moisturize and enhance skin radiance

  • Add 8-10 drops to water and spray in rooms or on furniture for a fresh aroma


Need a little boost in your day? Skip the coffee and take a whiff of peppermint to awaken your senses. The cooling and refreshing effect of peppermint is widely used to enhance mental alertness and heighten natural energy. Historically, peppermint was used to freshen breath, soothe digestive difficulties, and relieve headaches. Research has shown that inhaling peppermint oil increases mental accuracy by up to 28%. Warning: Do not place anywhere near eyes.

  • Rub 1-2 drops of peppermint onto the temples of the head to decrease intensity of headaches

  • If oil is safe to digest (the bottle should let you know), add 1-2 drops to herbal tea to enhance flavor and help aid healthy digestion

  • Diffuse a few drops or apply on hands and inhale to encourage focus and energy

  • Add a few drops to cream and massage into muscles

Tea Tree

Tea tree oil or Melaleuca Alternifolia, as it formally known, is most widely used to boost the immune system and fight infections. Recently, tea tree oil has been discovered to be a fantastic skin care product, being used as an effective home remedy for acne because of its antimicrobial properties. It even has the power to soothe dry flaking skin, even when it comes to dandruff. Toenail fungus, athlete’s food and ringworm can also be treated with tea tree oil. Amazing right?

  • Comfort dry, flaky skin or scalp by rubbing 1-3 drops of tea tree oil into the palms of your hands and massaging over areas of concern

  • Put tea tree oil on a clean cotton swab and rub over toenails and feet to treat and prevent fungus

  • Place 1-2 drops in a bowl of hot water, and inhale the vapors to help you get through a common cold

  • Add tea tree oil to your favorite massage oil to find relief from muscular pain, aches, and sprains
