Definitely squealed when Influenster sent over a complimentary Marc Jacobs Shameless Foundation! Here’s a quick review of the line’s new “building” foundation.
Always been a fan ofMarc Jacob’s fragrances, but have been a little hesitant to try out their make-up. The only experience I’ve had with their beauty products have been from Sephora’s birthday samples - ya know, their mini eyeliner and lipstick combo. Wasn’t a fan of those products as they both felt a little too runny, so I was intrigued by the brand releasing an oil-free product.
About the Product
MJ boasts that this is a hydrating, oil-free, flashback-free, SPF 25, building, self-setting foundation, with effects lasting up to 24 hours. That’s a rather ambitious list of adjectives, so let’s break that down.
Flashback-free: essentially means that when a photo with flash is taken of someone wearing the product, the light won’t bounce off the foundation (AKA avoid a shiny face)
SPF 25: something to always look for in skincare products. The foundation is surprisingly thin for having such a high SPF, also no visible discoloration - color stays true throughout application
Building: MJ really promotes that this is not a heavy product that will give you cakeface and cover up all of the natural details of your skin. As aforementioned, the foundation has a thin texture, allowing natural facials marks like freckles to still show through. If there are red spots or blemishes you’d like to fully cover up, all you need to do is run another layer of the foundation in just those areas and blend.
Self-setting: I’m no beauty expert, so bear with me as I still don’t understand the logic of “setting” or “baking.” But what I can say is that I didn’t need to do those things. Once the foundation dries, you you have any cracks or creases
24 hours effects: the foundation is long-lasting; however, the brand encourages consumers to reapply every 15 minutes if using the product solely for SPF protection
The foundation comes in 29 tones (yaaaassssss - shout out Fenty for making brands step up their color palettes). I personally used shade Medium Y390 (medium w/ golden undertones).
How to Apply
MJ offers videos on how to apply the foundation effectively, along with some tips to get the most out of the product (both videos hyperlinked - scroll down to "Explore the Product" section). Again, I’m no beauty expert, so my little process for applying the foundation is pretty basic, but gets the job done!
Give my skin a quick rinse
Apply moisturizer. As of late, I’ve been using Benefit’s Total Moisture Facial Cream and Instant Comeback Facial Serum
Apply foundation. I use ORIGINS Pore Perfecting Cooling Primer with Willowherb - a must-have!
Squeeze out a dime-size of the foundation and apply with a flat brush
Blend foundation evenly, build coverage on any trouble spots
Allow to dry. No need to “set”
Mini photo shoot after a night of no sleep - skin looking radiant thanks to MJ
True to its description, the foundation is “buildable.” I don’t typically use foundation unless I have a big event or photo shoot because A) tremendous fear of cakeface and B) it’s tough to find the right shade for my olive skin tone. I didn’t have any of those issues with this product. I didn’t feel like I had a clay veneer on my face, and the shade was just perfect for my color. Application also did last for pretty long. I recall using the foundation when I had a 19-hour day with no breaks to reapply, and the foundation did not run!
Literally a photo right after walking 800 steps of stairs for this view. Foundation did not run and I knew my skin was protected from the sun!
This foundation does not do well with dry skin. You absolutely need to moisturize your skin and apply primer before applying. My skin type dries fairly quickly, so it was not enough to just moisturize at night, then apply primer/foundation in the morning. I found the best results were when I applied moisturizer, primer, then foundation back-to-back.
Leave it or Need it?
I’d say overall this foundation is pretty great. I personally will still stick to applying foundation only for certain events. This is just a preference (a little time-consuming to have to go through an entire skin hydration routine to use this product effectively), especially at the retail price of $46 (it is Marc Jacobs after all), but I’m really glad that I have a solid foundation I can bank when it counts.
