There's No Time

This post is for anyone who feels like they just don’t have enough time in the day. If I can share a bit about myself, that’s how I’ve been feeling starting from the third week of January! (In case you haven’t glanced at a calendar lately, we are in April). I knew it was bad when I caught myself thinking that I didn’t have “enough time” to take a shower. That’s just not okay. Frustrated with myself and time and the universe, I decided to figure out what the real problem was, and I came to the conclusion that there were several problems. I’ll share with you my answers and then my thoughts on how to get back on track.

Problem #1 Losing track of priorities and goals

Without even realizing it, all of the goals I had set for myself in the beginning of the year got overshadowed by the daily routine of checking emails, running errands, hanging out with friends, etc. Not that any of those things are bad, but I gave them priority over my actual priorities. The truth is that there is not enough time for everything you want to do. That’s why it’s so important to protect your time and make sure that a majority of your time is spent on what matters to you the most.

Solution to Problem#1 Set weekly reminders to remember and put into action written goals and priorities. I’m old school, so I like to take 20 minutes on Sunday to plan my week out in my agenda, making sure that I spend a majority of my time doing the things that get me closer to my goals. I think the weekly check-up is important. If not, I could easily go a full year accomplishing the complete opposite of what I set out to do.

Problem#2 Waiting until later

You know that thing where you spend all your time catching up on old work? Yeah, it’s a waste. The third week of January was rough, and I’m STILL catching up. How did that happen? Well, I’d like to blame the deadliest sentence of all time: “I’ll get to that later.” Waiting to finish an important task is like adding charges to a credit card without paying it off, the debt builds until it’s unmanageable. Then, all your time goes into stressing out…yet another waste!

Solution to Problem #2 Introducing the wisest saying of all time: “Don’t put off till later what you can do now.” There’s a reason why this saying is so popular, it actually works. Paying off debt is never fun or easy. It’s a painstaking process that produces results. Buckle down, block off time, and get it done! Don’t wait till tomorrow. Spend time doing what you really want to do by removing the distraction of old tasks that haunt you.

Problem #3 Hitting snooze

Need I say more? Sleep is incredibly important, but oversleeping every day because being in bed is the best thing ever is the fast track to getting nothing done. Day after day of hitting the snooze button can develop into a dysfunctional routine. Rushed mornings are a poor foundation for the day. It's not a surprise that many successful people list rising early as one of their keys to success. 

Solution to Problem #3 Stop pressing snooze. Practically, disable the snooze feature on your alarm clock and get up! Don’t leave the morning to chance. Plan out a morning routine so that the second the alarm goes off, you get moving. Great mornings are the beginning of great days.
