The Lies We Believe

May 7, 2018

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! That’s exciting for me as a Mental Health Counselor because we need to be talking a lot more about our mental health. The brain is an organ just like our other body parts, so it’s insane to live in a culture that values physical health more than mental health. And by the way, physical health and mental health are intertwined. With that being said, let me ask you, how would you rate your own mental health? Do you feel like your mind is a healthy space, free from emotional baggage? If you felt a slight cringe or uncomfortable reaction to that question, please continue reading.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Every single person in this world struggles with SOMETHING. Yes, even the Instagram sensation whose life looks perfect struggles with something. This is not a cliché statement, it’s a fact. If the illusion of perfection is keeping you from stepping into your own messy reality, you’re believing the lie that you can never feel different. Here is a list of Lies many people believe about themselves:

“I’m too messed up to be helped.”

“What happened to me was so bad, I’ll never come back from it.”

“I don’t deserve to feel better.”

“I’ll never be able to change.”

“I already tried, and I don’t feel any better.”

“It’s too hard, and I don’t have what it takes to feel better.”

“I’m fine the way I am. I don’t need to change.”

“I can’t be helped.”

“If I talk about it, I’ll feel worse.”

“There’s no hope for me.”

LIES! If any of these statements hit home for you, welcome to the club, you are not the only one who has had these thoughts. And that is exactly what they are, just thoughts. Thoughts that feel extremely real and true. Even if you have messed up royally and walk around with a suitcase of regrets, welcome back into the club! So has everyone else! You are just as deserving of change and a healthy mental state. My hope is that this post will simply encourage you to consider the possibility of a life that’s different. Can you day-dream about that for a bit? What would your life be like if you didn’t believe the lie?
